Tartuffe

Tartuffe

Staging this classical text of the great master of comedy in a new translation by PrimožVitez and directed by Vito Taufer, who has already directed a whole series of successful plays in the Slovene National Theatre Nova Gorica, tries to situate the story in the context of contemporary times and the unbearable lightness of manipulation that we are facing in our daily existence. Orgon, a major tragicomic character of the play, is the head of the rich bourgeois family while a pious fraud Tartuffe infiltrates in it thanks to Orgon’s gullibility, pretending to be a strict Christian moral arbiter of all events in the house, whilethere are much more prosaic motives on his mind ...

Vito Taufer, director of the Slovene National Theatre Nova Goricastaging this play, read Molière's work as a psychological thriller: "It is about an extreme psychological analysis of relationships between the characters, and there lies the comedy of characters. Therefore we decided to deepen it and try to read it in the context of psychology as understood today. Because today we live in perverse times in which the values have been distorted and false. In today's world it is increasingly difficult to distinguish between the truth anda lie, borders have disappeared. Living in such a moral swamp enables manipulators to step onto thestage and operate with half-truths holding the world in complete absurdity. This is what we are striping bare through Molière's psychological thriller ".
