Performance Masks and an Exceptionally Rich Supporting Program on the Third Day of the Festival

The performance "Masks" in competition and numerous events in the so-called accompanying festival program will mark Monday, April 22nd, the third day of the 34th Days of Marulic, the Croatian Drama Festival.

Actor Dražen Šivak will present his monodrama "Masks" on the stage of the Split Youth Theatre starting at 8:00 p.m. In a hybrid form that constantly oscillates between lecture and theater performance, Dražen Šivak focuses on the mask as an extremely potent performative element, showing us the level of dedication and trust contained in the encounter with the audience and why the mask in theater has always been a means of revelation, not concealment of truth. The play "Masks" revives the tradition of commedia dell'arte and brings it closer to a wider audience. Traveling through classical Croatian and world dramatic literature (Držić, Shakespeare, Molière, etc.), viewers connect archetypal stories about human relationships and draw parallels with the characters of our contemporaries.

The dramaturgy of the play is signed by Patrik Gregurec and Karla Leko, costume design is by Petra Pavičić, creative collaborator is Maja Posavec, masks are made by Miljenko Sekulić Sarma, lighting is designed by Bartul Pejković, and the song is by Željko Vukmirica. The play was produced in co-production with the Art Organization Grupa and the Dubrovnik Summer Festival, in collaboration with the Ribnjak Scene and the Exit Theater.

"My Brother Marko" is the title of the educational walk through Split, which will take place as part of the 34th Days of Marulic and on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the death of the first Croatian writer Marko Marulić, a citizen of Split, on April 22nd, 24th, and 26th, starting at 11:00 a.m. Fans of Split, history, and literature have the opportunity to join a walk through Marulić's Split led by Gorana Gita Galić, a licensed guide and excellent connoisseur of the city's history. Gita will, through an educational story, play the role of Marko Marulić's sister and through interesting stories and characters, provide insight into the life and times of Marko Marulić. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience the atmosphere and spirit of past times and enrich their experience and understanding of Split's history during the Renaissance. Due to the limited number of participants, prior registration is required at karla.mrsan@hnk-split.hr (please provide your full name and chosen date of the walk).

The theatrical part of the 34th Days of Marulic will be complemented by the presentation of drama collections "Marin Držić Award. Croatian Drama 2022/2023" in the foyer of the Croatian National Theater in Split starting at 11:00 a.m. The first prize-winning text in the "Marin Držić" competition, "Foreign Warmth" by Espi Tomičić, will be publicly read at the "Luxor" café starting from 12:30 p.m. performed by third-year students of the Acting Pre-Diploma Study of the Academy of Arts in Split under the mentorship of Prof. Art.
