The Merchant of Venice

Although many consider him to be a wizard among directors, Alexander Ogarev will certainly not offer any instant-ready solution in The Merchant of Venice, but he will definitely offer the whole array of spiritual and scenic challenges together with the whole Croatian National Theatre Split Drama Ensemble, while two main roles, Shylock, a Jew and Antonio, a merchant of Venice have been entrusted to Ozren Grabarić and Elvis Bošnjak ...

The Merchant of Venice

The story of The Merchant of Venice happens in a world saturated by trade and money, world of the Venetian 16th century that seems like it would collapse any moment now or at least destroy many human destinies. As this world gets stronger, the more human destinies it destroys or threatens to destroy, what else we can do but to describe our eternal, therefore our present earthly troubles.

Because it does not matter whether we borrow money - as Bassanio who wants Portia - for a wedding, house or health, or for the outstanding debt repayment. Every time again we find ourselves in front of the same wall: "The extent of the power of money is the extent of my power..." Thus we stand in front of this wall until we decide to confront it, and even break it. Whether we will be rewarded with more money or with the world that should have already taken the financial veil off, this is the story of the Merchant carried within each of us.

Although many consider him to be a wizard among directors, Aleksandar Ogarjov will certainly not offer any instant-ready solution in The Merchant of Venice, but he will definitely offer the whole array of spiritual and scenic challenges together with the whole Croatian National Theatre Split Drama Ensemble, while two main roles, Shylock, a Jew and Antonio, a merchant of Venice have been entrusted to Ozren Grabarić and Elvis Bošnjak ...
