Poetry - An Evening with Drago Štambuk

Gold and Dust of the Kings

Drago Štambuk, is a physician, diplomat, and poetic cosmopolitan. Regarded one of the leading Croatian contemporary poets, he treats language with startling vehemence. Vesna Parun emphasizes his general detachment and calls him a pagan priest and a loner. The great Raymond Carver named him "a real poet”.

Gold and Dust of the Kings

Consistently closing historical distance, Drago Štambuk establishes the magical simultaneity such as we find at Cavafy and Seferis. “His poetry is solemn and moving” writes Milana Vuković Runjić; penetrating all the way to phosphoric ancestral bones, the poet moves like a psychonaut between the world of living and world of the dead; if necessary, he will open the very graves. Some of his pre-war poems are terrifying and apocalyptic predictions.
