Ero the Joker

The most popular and beloved Croatian opera comes again to the place where it originally came from – to Vrlika, birth place of librettist Begović, as well as birth place of many folkloric impetuses that composer Gotovac so ingeniously incorporated into this brilliant comic opera.

Ero the Joker

Ero the Joker, composed to the script of the writer Milan Begović, is the only Croatian opera performed abroad, chiefly in Germany. Disguise exploit of a rich farmer, called Mićo, who pretends to have come from the other world in order to test the devotion and nature of the girl he loves, is developed through a rich sequence of funny situations and actions. The opera is full of beautiful folk songs that Gotovac incorporated in his work with a skill of great artist. Deprived of pathos, full of sparkling satire, this opera ranks among the best works of Slavic opera literature. This summer it will be performed in its most natural environment – where it originally came from – in Vrlika, Begović's birth place, as well as birth place of many folkloric impetuses that Gotovac so ingeniously incorporated into Ero the Joker.
