55th Split Summer Festival

Split Summer Festival (1954 - 2009) is an artistic festival that has been building its national and international reputation since the second half of the twentieth century. Besides the Dubrovnik Summer Festival it is the festival with the longest and the shiniest tradition of classical spectrum of scenic arts (opera, drama, ballet, concert...) while its panoply has been spreading with time: from jazz concerts and film festivals to exhibitions, performances and street theater. The most persistent and the strongest organizational link of the Festival is the Croatian National Theater Split, national theater that has been an inevitable and key point of Split culture life and one of the most vital points in the theater life of the whole Croatia.

As a proof of Festival's importance and quality counts the fact that the national TV broadcasts live numerous programs of the Split Summer Festival every year, and since 1984 there are professional rewards for the best music and drama performances which gives this Festival a special charm while the most eminent music and drama critics' names who decide on the rewards have been related to the Festival. Split Summer Festival stages are a special story: from Peristyle as the oldest one, the most beautiful and the most "opera" one, to Diocletian's Palace Basement divinely inspired place for numerous drama and exhibition performances, or Gripe Fortress and Sustipan known for dance performances, to Arts Gallery and Mestrovic Gallery just made for extraordinary concert performances...

City squares: from the biggest one Prokurative, Piazza, Marko Marulic Square to Carrara Square or little piazzas in the very heart of the town, represent not only drama and popular play scenes, but also places for spontaneous gatherings with performances and ocoppello singing.
