Albert Camus
Caligula
Stage: CNT Split
“What has kept Pandur’s Theater fresh and original all these years is an honest and uncompromising creativity approach; we are lef under the impression that a peculiar Slovene is one of rare directors from the region who understands direction exclusively as masochistic staging of his own visions”.
This critic on overall Pandur’s theater work should be completed by statements about Caligula: “Tomaž Pandur and his group set very high standards by their Caligula, staging the theater of dreams which “drowns” the spectator enchanting them by perfection of direction and performance of the whole ensemble, incredibly impressive set design and magical play of music and lights. That way a spectator can, even if it is just for a moment, reach the Moon!”
“Caligula dreamt of the empire of impossible. The empire where East and West areorganically joined in one. The empire where knowledge and wisdom of ancient Egypt would serve for the glory and greatness of Rome. The empire where people have as many rights as are their capabilities, so in that empire a liberated slave Helicon would have more rights than some senators, more stupid than Caligula’s horse. The empire where it would be possible for palaces and temples to foat on lakes and it would also be possible to make the Moon as part of that huge, unique Empire.”
