Mr. Single

Željko Vukmirica (1953) is one of rarely versatile and unpredictable artists who has been successfully opposing to any kind of actor – director clichés ever since the times of establishing Greetings Theater Workshop (together with Ivica Boban and Mladen Vassary). Today is no diferent when, afer many years of working with Zagreb ITD Theater and Gavella Theater, as well as numerous and diferent European artistic master courses and cooperation, Vukmirica realizes mostly his own projects cooperating with people with similar sensibility. Among them The History of My Stupidity should be emphasized (performed almost thousand times), Glühlampe, Rain, Cabaret – Kabaretevich and Reality Ordered.

Mr. Single project Vukmirica realized in cooperation with director, founder and art manager of the Exit Theatre, Matko Raguž, who found Vukmirica’s Mr. Single as a kind of “sound Caspar”, while the dramaturge Pavlica Bajsić has been even more picturesque when she said that Željko Vukmirica, with his volcanic energy walks like Charlie Chaplin through time and space “ofering us the geometry of universal loneliness”.

“We very ofen pass by Mr. Single” – Pavlica Bajsić used to say. “Pensive person, if we might say so. His head mildly bowed observing the geometry of his steps. Unchanged for years. Geometry of his everyday life. Not even Sunday can change the picture of his week. Sunday, day when everybody slows down and expands time. The day when Mr. Single becomes Don Quixote in front of windmills of loneliness. His spear is his imagination, provoked by the banal. Radio, newspaper, television. His shield is his longing for the “ideal something”, Dulcinea of his spirit and heart. Both his shield and his spear fall confronted with indefensible, ruthless, galloping Monday. The sound of this lonely, already lost batle becomes signifying and generally recognizable language.
