Ribarske svađe

If we would like to retell the story of The Fishermen’s Quarrels it would go something like this: “Paškva, Lucijeta, Libera, Uršula and Keka are kniting and talking, waiting for men to come from fshing. Keka desperately wants to get married although she is still too young for that, Lucijeta has been arranging her marriage with Ivanko for two years now, and Keka likes him as well. Krište, the owner of the boat, passes by them. Girls are nice to him, especially Lucijeta and Keka, so he sits with them for a while…”
However, it is not all as it looks, Vinko Brešan, a director, would say: “Dalmatia is not Mediterranean Arcadia. It is not a pleasant place where happy women embroider laces and sing. It is not a place where temper is the only problem people have which might lead them to litle quarrels but it all ends well at the end. It is a beautiful place where unhappy people live doing what they do not like, having visions and ambitions of what will never come. It is a place where corruption rules and where power and fortune go hand by hand. It is place where bad taste and kitsch rule. All quarrels come from frustrations and it never ends well. It is the reason why we are seting The Fishermen’s Quarrels today.”
