Don Carlos

Only late 20th century introduced the opinion that Don Carlos is not only one of the most ambitious Verdi’s operas, but also one of his masterpieces. It may be that such a slow gain of popularity and justified assessment is due to numerous versions of the opera (there are eight “authentic” versions of the score). In spite of that, Verdi has given the world one of the most beautiful musical-dramatic poems of freedom and friendship. He has used all basic ideas of Schiller’s work to the fullest creating on a wide historic background few of his most pronounced characters and building their mutual conflicts. Besides the director Petar Selem, sovereign connoisseur of overall Verdi’s opus and the conductor Ivan Repušić, who has already gained his reputation of brilliant interpreter of Verdi’s musical ideas, there are some of the most imposing names of the Croatian opera scene among the soloists as well as numerous names with international opera esteem.
