The artistic duo TARWUK at Salon Galić from July 15th

The artistic duo TARWUK at Salon Galić from July 15th

Following exhibitions in London, Paris, and New York, and five years since their last solo exhibition in Croatia, held at Lauba in Zagreb, the art collective TARWUK returns to the Croatian public with two new exhibitions.

The first, I AM I, BUT I AM YOU, AND YOU ARE YOU, BUT YOU ARE ALSO I, opens on Tuesday, July 15th at 7:30 PM at Salon Galić in Split, organized by the Croatian Association of Visual Artists Split (HULU-Split) and the Croatian National Theatre Split, as part of the 71st Split Summer Festival. The conceptually related continuation of the exhibition will open on September 16 at the Cultural Centre Osijek.
Valentina Radoš is the curator of both exhibitions.

The exhibition at Salon Galić will remain open until August 13th.

The project is realised through the collaboration of HULU-Split, the Croatian National Theatre Split, and the Cultural Centre Osijek, with thanks and support to the Museum of Fine Arts Split, WHITE CUBE LIMITED (London) and WHITE CUBE PARIS SARL (Paris). It is co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia, the Kultura nova Foundation, the City of Split, the Split Tourist Board, and the Split-Dalmatia County.

The artistic duo TARWUK, consisting of Bruno Pogačnik Tremow and Ivana Vukšić (born 1981 in Zagreb and Dubrovnik), have been working from New York for many years, developing a complex artistic language through an interdisciplinary approach that encompasses sculpture, installation, performance, writing, and film. They have an ongoing collaboration with curator Valentina Radoš, working together on projects that explore contemporary identity, collectivity, and the emotional archaeology of space.

With I AM I, BUT I AM YOU, AND YOU ARE YOU, BUT YOU ARE ALSO I, and its Osijek counterpart, TARWUK examines the concept of home as a site of theatricality—a space where return and reconstruction, togetherness and inner conflict intertwine.

The exhibition features scenographic elements from productions by the Croatian National Theatre Split, as well as a performance filmed inside the theatre itself, in collaboration with curator Cory Scozzari (Cordova, Barcelona). This video, along with other existing materials, will also be shown in the Osijek edition of the exhibition.

“Entering TARWUK's exhibition space is akin to stepping into another dimension—one that is at once seductively unfamiliar and deeply recognisable. This is not an exhibition in the conventional sense of the word, but rather a spatialized state of consciousness that engages our physical presence. As the title itself suggests, this is more than a collection of artworks; we enter into a coexistence with Ivana and Bruno, and they with us, because the ever-transformative question of selfhood lies at the heart of what TARWUK is. This duo, who share both artistic and life creation without distinguishing between the two, expands their circle based on a principle of radical universality and emotional resonance among people beyond categorisation or description. The core consists of a single entity—four hands and two hearts—yet the outer form of their collective evolves from exhibition to exhibition, often including collaborators from past projects as well as family and friends. TARWUK’s concept of the exhibition as a living, life-infused artistic gesture resists all boundaries. Every installation, including this one, exists in a state of constant flux, functioning as a total environment composed of drawings, paintings, sculptures, found objects, performance, and film—each time specific, and each time reanimated in a new space. The broader symbolism of the fluidity of our many identities and the moments where they intersect with others forms the conceptual core of this project, while the performative principles of theatre shape its external manifestation.” (Valentina Radoš, from the exhibition’s curatorial text)

About the Artists:

TARWUK is an artistic collective formed by Bruno Pogačnik Tremow, born in Zagreb in 1981, and Ivana Vukšić, born the same year in Dubrovnik. Currently living and working in New York, their practice is deeply collaborative and defies clear boundaries between art and life. Their work draws from the legacy of the Yugoslav avant-garde and Eastern European art, engaging with themes of individuality, identity, and transformation through an interdisciplinary approach that encompasses sculpture, installation, performance, writing, and film.

They have exhibited extensively on the international stage. Their solo exhibitions have been presented at institutions and galleries such as Matthew Brown in New York, White Cube in both Paris and London, Halle für Steiermark in Graz, Collezione Maramotti in Reggio Emilia, the Museum of Fine Arts in Osijek, and the Mali salon of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka. In addition to their solo work, TARWUK has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including those held at Lafayette Anticipations in Paris, Kim? Contemporary Art Centre in Riga, Frye Art Museum in Seattle, Kunsthalle Wichita in Kansas, and the Drava Art Biennale in Osijek, Croatia.

Through their evolving and immersive installations, TARWUK continually interrogates the boundaries of the self and the collective, crafting emotionally resonant environments that speak to shared human experiences beyond conventional categories.
