“Theatre with a soul” — Split premiere of the play "From Nowhere To Nowhere" by Bekim Sejranović, directed by Ivica Buljan.

The novel From Nowhere To Nowhere, one of the most significant Croatian novels of the 21st century, written in an autobiographical vein, tells the story of Bekim Sejranović — from his childhood in Brčko, through his high school years in Rijeka, to his move to Norway, where he becomes a translator and lecturer. The stage adaptation is by Goran Vojnović, and the director is Ivica Buljan — a theatre artist known for his expressive and emotionally powerful style that blurs the line between reality and fiction.

The play, which features striking musical and visual poetics, presents two interpretations of Bekim: Leon Lučev as the adult author, and Tarik Žižak as the boy who observes the world around him with uncertainty and defiance. Alongside them, the cast includes HNK Split leading actress Nives Ivanković, Aleksandra Stojaković Olenjuk, Romina Tonković, Dražen Mikulić, Zoran Prodanović Prlja, Deni Sanković, Ana Marija Brđanović, Petar Baljak, Nika Grbelja, and Damir Orlić.

According to critics, this is a layered theatrical portrait of both the author and the time he came from. “Rijeka has gained a new, living monument — a play that must be seen, and one that deserves to travel across Croatia and the region,” wrote Bojana Radović in Večernji list. Kim Cuculić in Novi list highlighted “the powerful acting energy and precise direction that transforms Sejranović’s prose into theatre with a soul.”

The production also features an arrangement of the song “Niotkuda” by the band Let 3, as well as “Javna kupatila” by the cult Rijeka group Paraf. The set design is by Aleksandar Denićthe costume design by Ana Savić-Gecan, the music by Mitja Vrhovnik Smrekar, the lighting design by Sonda Trinajst, and the video design by Toni Soprano Meneglejte.
