Audiovisual art intervention Heterotopia and the City points to the possibility of conversion of the Croatian National Theatre Split (which, being almost an “untouchable” institution, in this case is used as a synonym for all threatened human and cultural values in Split) into one commercial accommodation capacity, clearly rising public awareness of the issue of invasive strategies.
Over the last few years we have witnessed the transformation of our City from recognizable transit point into an increasingly popular tourist destination. Circumstances and the speed of the above mentioned situation have led to the disturbance of the symbiotic nature of the City and its inhabitants, to favouring the privileged minorities and breeding the climate of economic monoculture. The City has become a scenery for tourists made of the shell of its former self, nowadays home to hundreds of cafés and restaurants, souvenir shops and sales booths, wine, cheese and burger bars ... It is the dead season in winter and in the summer the City becomes “occupied” and “alienated” for its own citizens. Split is becoming less of a town and more of a destination.
