Orest Shourgot is a Croatian and Ukrainian violinist, pedagogue, chamber musician, concertmaster, and collector, and a full professor at the Zagreb Academy of Music. He comes from a distinguished family of intellectuals and artists from Lviv, Galicia. He represents the violin school of Leonid Kogan and Abram Yampolsky, and through his mother, a violinist, the school of David Oistrakh and Petro Bondarenko. His violinistic lineage can be traced through Alexander Weisfeld and David Bertie to Leopold Auer, Jakob Dont, and Joseph Joachim.

Following four first prizes and one second prize at international competitions, he taught violin during his postgraduate studies at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow in the class of Viktor Tretyakov. As a student, he performed with the ensemble Moscow Soloists under the direction of Yuri Bashmet. From 1994 to 1996, he served as concertmaster of the Contemporary Music Ensemble of the Union of Russian Composers, under the patronage of Edison Denisov. With this ensemble, he premiered works in Paris and Amsterdam in 1995.

He holds a conducting degree, having graduated in 2006 from the Lviv Conservatory in the class of Professor Yuriy Lutsiv. He moved to Croatia in 1997. He is the recipient of the Judita Award (2023) and the Neven Award at the Festival of St. Mark (2018) for his complete performance of Bach’s Six Sonatas for Solo Violin. He is the first and only violinist in Croatia to perform both the Six Sonatas for Solo Violin by Johann Sebastian Bach and the complete cycle by Eugène Ysaÿe in the same year.

As a soloist, he has performed in France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Poland, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Canada, South Korea, and many other countries. As a concertmaster, he has played in Japan, China, the United States, Oman, Kuwait, and throughout Europe. He has given masterclasses in Portugal, France, Croatia, South Korea, Kuwait, and more. He has served as a jury member at competitions, including in Sion, Switzerland.

He currently plays a 1706 Giuseppe Guarneri filius Andrea violin, owned by the Gerard Segelman dynasty in London.
